Gedempte Gracht

optimizing family living in a historic home

In this ongoing project, we are transforming the layout of a 1910 family house in Haarlem to make everyday life more comfortable and efficient.

The challenge lies in creating additional storage and flexible spaces while preserving the historic charm of the building. By carefully removing and repositioning walls, we free up space and improve the flow between rooms.

In the children’s rooms, intermediate areas are designed for double use, so every square meter is functional and playful at the same time.

As architects, we also supported the process beyond design. We guided the client through the permit application with the gemeente and created detailed 2D and 3D drawings to present different design options, helping the family visualize how the changes would feel.

At the same time, we are rethinking the technical infrastructure, from electrical planning to heating, ensuring the renovated home is not only practical today but also future-ready.

This combination of spatial optimization, technical planning, and respect for the house’s original character will allow the family to enjoy a modern way of living while staying rooted in the history of their home.
